History of Broadwater and Worthing There is little point to me attempting a lavish history to Worthing and Broadwater since this has already been done many times by people far more knowledgeable than me. I would point the reader at the online versions of the “Victoria County History” to give excellent background information. As my focus is that of family history I should point out that once not so very long ago Worthing was a tiny hamlet within the parish of Broadwater and hence until 1855(when the parish of Christchurch was created) the vast majority of baptisms for the children of Worthing people will appear in the parish registers of Broadwater, St Mary’s. Also note that in regard to civil registration which began in 1st July 1837 the district of Worthing(GRO volumes : VII(1837-51); 2b(1852-69)) was created with sub-districts of Arundel, Braodwater and Littlehampton. As at 1st January 1870 the Worthing District was abolished and both Worthing and Broadwater became part of East Preston District(GRO volumes : 2b(1870-1930)). Hopefully the transcriptions in this site will be of value to anyone with ancestors who lived in Worthing or Broadwater. Please however bear in mind the transcriptions are my work and they certainly come with a health warning as I do make mistakes. If you do spot anything obviously wrong I would appreciate it if you could let me know at helpbroad@barriesgenealogy.co.uk .
